	  <description>Over the span of the last century, the charkha or spinning wheel of India has symbolized non violence, independence and economic progress. Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Indian nation, promoted the charkha during India’s freedom struggle as a symbol of self-reliance and as a source of income for the rural population. It was emblazoned on the flag of the Congress party, the political party that was built to govern India based upon Gandhi’s economic vision. Today, more than 50 years after independence, the charkha has also become a symbol of sustainable energy production.

Southern India has a zero-emissions ride that is equally as good for laughs as it is for the environment. A fun fair operator created a ferris wheel that is human-powered. A team of men take turns hopping on the top of the wheel and riding it down to keep the wheels momentum up and passengers spinning around.

	  <description>Frugal Green Living is hot these days as we try to consume less and save more. The former Masters of the Universe on Wall Street did not, and one of the contentious issues in the bailout is whether they should have their salaries capped. Perhaps they would not have got into such trouble had they lived a more frugal lifestyle and set better examples for their companies.

Azim Premji runs Wipro, the big Indian IT outsourcing company that probably doesn't have too many fans in America but makes him the 5th richest man in India, worth $17 billion. He flies coach.

	  <description>Like many multicultural moms, I find a direct link between a sustainable way of living and the wisdom of old world cultures. As an Indian mom, I have always had a tremendously soft spot for South Asia inspired parenting resources. I have always maintained that it is not easy raising multicultural kids, so I will take all the help I can get.
An old adage tells us that company loves misery, obviously other moms like me feel the same way! I was thrilled to hear from Sonia Gupta about My Little Pakora, an organic children’s clothing retailer and online multi-cultural resource center, blends the latest information about organic and sustainable lifestyles with the uniquely similar cultural traditions of South Asia and other cultures around the world.

	  <title>Parag Khanna: Embrace the Post-American Age (Feeds.wired.com)</title>
	  <link>http://www.earth-stream.com/Earth/Continents/India/Parag-Khanna-Embrace-the-Post-American-Age_18_197_671_132728.html</link>
	  <description>Here's one view of America circa 2008: The US is a modern-day Roman Empire — overstretched, underperforming, slowly crumbling into history's dustbin. Here's Parag Khanna's view: Nonsense. The geopolitical wooziness Americans are feeling isn't decline. It's realignment.

In his book The Second World: Empires and Influence in the New Global Order, Khanna, 31, describes a planet dominated by a trio of superpowers: the US, China, and Europe. In this tripolar era, America's fate depends on tough national choices, not lame historical analogies. If the US wises up — by tightening trade and energy ties to the rest of the hemisphere, pursuing economic innovation at home, and establishing a &quot;diplomatic-industrial complex&quot; — it can grow stronger even as the globe becomes less red, white, and blue.

Khanna himself is a peripatetic emblem of this post-American world. Born in India, he lived as a child in the United Arab Emirates, and attended high school in the US and Germany. He earned two degrees from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. Then he punched his ticket at places that might earn him early admission at the Trilateral Commission: the Council on Foreign Relations, the Brookings Institution, and the World Economic Forum. &quot;I think I'm the only person who went to Davos seven times by the age of 30,&quot; the smooth-talking wunderwonk says. &quot;I'm not sure that's a good thing.&quot;

From Canada to Uzbekistan, Khanna identifies the unexpected flash points, overstated threats, and hidden opportunities the next US president might confront.

8 Regions to Watch

	Mexico and Canada

	Integrate, don't isolate

	America's oil comes from a volatile region half a world away. That's lunacy, Khanna says. &quot;An energy partnership with Mexico, Canada, Venezuela, and Brazil could make the US much less dependent on oil from the Middle East.&quot; That's also why building a wall along our southern border is foolish. &quot;We should treat Mexico like Europe ...</description>
